A famous work of the belgian orientalistic painter Jean-François Portaels.
The first orientalistic paintings of Portaels were exposed in Antwerp in 1847 and aroused a lot of interest. He was a student of Paul Delaroche and won "le grand prix de Rome" in 1843 at the age of 25. After spending some years in Italy, he went to Egypt where he found inspiration for his most wanted work.
Later on he teached at the Brussels Academy.
