Famous print of an almée. One of the most beautiful and finest works of an almeh. It was a theme that inspired many orientalists and strangely enough dancers were pictured in exactly the same dress and movement but in a different setting.
The word almée comes from the arabic root ilm (knowledge) and alim (the one who knows, wise, learned, expert, scholar).
The almée were learned women and knew how to recite the Holy Quran, the Hadith and other - not only of religious - works. They also were good singers, excellent dancers and sometimes outstanding musicians.
